College and the High Holidays

In-person classes began this week at the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri. That means KU Hillel, Chabad at KU at Chabad at Mizzou have begun providing programming for Jewish students at their prospective universities, that are, according to MU Chabad’s Rabbi Avraham Lapine, “physically distanced but emotionally close.” All three organizations are planning services for the High Holidays.

Late last week KU Hillel’s Development and Marketing Director Savannah Kannberg told The Chronicle the organization was still firming up its holiday plans.

“We will be providing High Holiday services on campus, outdoors and with social distancing,” she said.

Rabbi Lapine confirmed holiday activities are also being finalized at Chabad at Mizzou.

Detailed plans are already in place at Chabad at KU, which Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel co-directs with his wife Nechama. He reported its services will be capped at 35 people per event and will be outdoors in its new open tent that is being used for short, small group services. Participants will wear masks and observe social distancing.

“There will be multiple shifts for these services that will require reservations to limit the numbers of those attending each service,” Rabbi Tiechtel explained.

Holiday meals will also be offered in shifts to keep the numbers inside the tent safe and comfortable. A new option this year is pre-packaged kosher meals, which can be eaten at home as well as “Do-It-Yourself” kits including a how-to guide, messages and prayers to help students celebrate the holidays in their own homes.

Rabbi Tiechtel added, “We are also planning a short shofar blowing service and a High Holiday message in a large outdoor space, with masks and social distancing, where we can all see each other.”

“The world may be different, but our goal remains the same: To create thriving Jewish life and community on campus — safely and responsibly,” Rabbi Tiechtel concluded.
