Local Jewish family completes land gift to Jackson County

William M. Klein Park
Forty-three years after an initial donation of land to establish the William M. Klein Park (home of Cave Spring Park and Historic Site) at Gregory and Blue Ridge Extension, members of the Klein family have donated the remaining 3.4 acres to Jackson County.
The park is home to the Cave Spring Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the grounds for the recreational and educational enjoyment of the community. In 1978, the Cave Spring site was entered into the National Register of Historic Places, as it was an original campground on the Santa Fe Trail used by pioneers travelling west in the 1800s.
Kansas City businessman and community benefactor William (Bill) Klein had originally planned to develop the 39-acre site. Instead, local community members, with the support of the county legislature, prevailed upon Klein to establish a park and honor the historical significance of the trail. All but the street-facing corner parcel was in the county’s control at the time of Klein’s passing in 1979, when the park was named in his honor. In the ensuing years, Klein’s family never pursued the development of this last piece of land.
“We always thought that in the end, we would complete the circle and donate this most visible tract to protect the integrity of the park,” said James Klein, one of Bill’s three sons. He lives in the Kansas City area and is a member of Congregation Beth Torah.
The park offers 4.5 miles of trails around ponds, natural streams, a historic cave and stone chimney remnants from original cabins.
“It is gratifying to see families, scouting troops and school children hike these trails, as we did with our father,” added James’ brother, Robert.
Jackson County officials welcomed the donation.
“Our parks system is one of the best in the country and we are excited about the opportunity to add more fun and exploration to William M. Klein Park,” said Jackson County Executive Frank White, Jr. “We are honored that the Klein family has entrusted Jackson County with this piece of history and with the help of a dedicated volunteer group, we will take great care of it.”
Parks Director Michele Newman added “Jackson County Parks + Rec thanks the Klein family for their thoughtful donation. Because of their sincere generosity, patrons will enjoy this park for many years to come.”
The park and the interpretive center that houses much of the ground’s history is maintained by the Cave Spring Association, founded by community volunteer Sylvia Mooney and led by longtime Executive Director Al Maddox.
Numerous park activities are planned throughout the year and periodic fundraisers are held to underwrite improvements on the grounds and trail markings.
“We are truly grateful for the stewardship that this volunteer group has provided, as well as the county’s commitment to preserve the park’s purpose for the benefit of future generations.” added Nat Klein, Bill’s oldest son.
