Feld named Chronicle’s new editor

Steve Rose, owner and publisher of The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle, has announced that longtime Editor Barbara Bayer is retiring and Meryl Feld has been chosen as the weekly newspaper’s new editor.
“Although we will certainly miss Barbara Bayer, we are very excited about Meryl taking the leading role as editor of The Chronicle,” Rose said. “Meryl is already a fountain of new ideas and brings great enthusiasm to her new role. Readers can soon look forward to expanded local news coverage, new features and a redesign of the newspaper. In addition, Meryl brings with her a vision of expanding The Chronicle’s digital footprint in the community.”
The next month will be a time of transition for The Chronicle. Feld will take over all Chronicle editor duties for the March 5 edition and can be reached at . Marcia Montgomery will continue in her role with the weekly newspaper with the new title of associate editor.
“Meryl is a deeply religious person and is steeped in Jewish knowledge. That and her journalism background are great qualities for the voice of the Jewish community,” Rose said.
Feld said she is honored to be joining The Chronicle’s team.
“For a century, The Chronicle has been our community’s unifying voice. I look forward to continuing this tradition,” she said.
A native of Overland Park, Feld has experience as a production coordinator for Dateline NBC, producing and reporting for local television news, writing for various publications and editing an online magazine. Feld was trained as a print and multimedia journalist at the University of Arizona’s School of Journalism and Honors College.
“Barbara has left me with big shoes to fill. I cannot express my gratitude for her mentorship and dedication to The Chronicle,” Feld said.
Bayer began serving her second stint as The Chronicle’s editor in November 2010 and has been associated with newspaper in a variety of roles for more than 30 years. She will stay on with Rose Publications as the editor of The Chronicle’s special Centennial Edition, slated for publication in July.
“I am looking forward to mentoring Meryl in the next few weeks as she begins her role as Chronicle editor,” Bayer said. “While I have a long history with The Chronicle, I am excited to learn more about our community’s history as reported in The Chronicle over the past 100 years as we prepare our special Centennial Edition.”
