It’s official, the city of Kansas City, Missouri, has declared today, Thursday, Dec. 21, Big Sonia Day. Filmmaker Leah Warshawski, who also happens to be “Big Sonia” Warshawski’s granddaughter, had this to say about the tribute: “We’re honored that the city is choosing to recognize the power of one small woman to make a BIG impact, and the triumph of “love over hate.”
Here’s the announcement:
Councilwoman Heather Hall will introduce a resolution to the Mayor and City Council to honor Sonia Warshawski, declaring Dec. 21 as “Big Sonia Day.”
“It is my distinct honor to recognize Sonia for her big heart and perseverance. I admire her dedication to civility, love and kindness and ask all citizens of Kansas City to live like Sonia,” Councilwoman Hall said.
Sonia Warshawski is a Holocaust survivor and a citizen of the greater metropolitan Kansas City area. Warshawski continues to show compassion, determination and service in educating the world of the Holocaust and her legacy. She has been influential in breaking many barriers involving our communities, her message of love and tolerance has healed many hurting people and she remains a strong role model for so many.
“We’re overjoyed that Sonia’s message of ‘love over hate’ is resonating with so many people of all ages, races, cultures and ethnicities around the globe. Big Sonia Day reminds us that the small acts matter BIG and we’re honored that the ‘Sonia Effect’ is spreading rapidly!” “BIG SONIA” producer Leah Warshawski said.
