SUPPORT MATNAT CHAIM — In 2013, Kansas City native Judy Singer, donated a kidney to Rena, a mother of two from Haifa who was suffering from severe kidney disease. Today Rena is enjoying good health, and Singer has never felt better. To celebrate this affirmation of life, Singer, who made aliyah to Israel in 1983 and since 1991 has lived in Kibbutz Merav in the rural north, is running in the Jerusalem Marathon on March 18 with a unique team of kidney donors and kidney recipients (and family and friends) from “Matnat Chaim,” an Israeli non-profit that encourages healthy volunteers to donate kidneys to patients who need a transplant. Singer is actually running a 5K that day, but before she donated her kidney, she said she “couldn’t run even 1K so I’m making progress!” Her daughter Zohar will be running 10K with our team.

Singer said, “Matnat Chaim has so far facilitated an astonishing 270 kidney transplants. The organization has saved 270 lives as well as turning 270 ordinary people into life-savers and giving them an experience which is truly life-changing. Matnat Chaim has also been responsible for completely altering the way Israelis view organ transplants, and turning Israel into a world leader for living organ donation.”

Singer is seeking support for her marathon run. Donations may be made at her fundraising page: http://bit.ly/Judy-marathon. Singer is the daughter of the late Milton and Bea Firestone. Milton was the longtime editor of The Chronicle and Bea, who also worked for the newspaper for many, many years, created this column!
