Listening Post

Enjoying Heart of America BBG’s senior farewell before ending their time in BBYO in 1975 are Barbara Baellow (Bayer) (from left), Lanie Singer (Browar), Beau Howard Cohen, Janice Sherman (Katz), Lynn Perlman and Debbie Singmon (Dubinsky).

BBYO WILL KEEP US TOGETHER … — It’s not a surprise to anyone who knows me that I have a soft spot in my heart for BBYO because it was a very important part of my teen years. I can honestly say what I learned in BBG — specifically Heart of America BBG — has helped me in some way through every phase of my life that followed, including and especially all my work here at The Chronicle.

A group of dedicated volunteers is putting together a BBYO reunion on Saturday night, June 18 (Father’s Day weekend). They are looking for contact information for anyone who has ever been a member of BBYO — AZA or BBG. The link to sign up for information is http://goo.gl/forms/eDT7gkQ02u. Information will also be posted on the BBYO Reunion Facebook page (but you still need to go to the link, joining the page will not get you on the list.) If you don’t consider yourself technically savvy, you can email Peter Loftspring () or Rachel Zoller () for more information. If email isn’t your thing either, call me at 913-951-8425 and I will see that the reunion committee gets your information.

To add to the fun, thumbing through the pages of The Chronicle over the next several weeks you’ll see BBYO pics (similar to what you see on this page) from way back when. We have some pics, but if you have others you think are of interest, let us know. Maybe you’ll see it in print!

He would be grateful to Chronicle readers for other recommendations to consider, which would further illuminate this wonderful guide for Jewish living. Please contact him at 816-795-1386 or

U.S. HOLOCAUST MUSEUM TO COLLECT ITEMS FOR TIME CAPSULE Washington (JTA) — The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is seeking messages and personal artifacts from Holocaust survivors for a time capsule to be opened on the museum’s 50th anniversary in 2043.

The capsule will be on display in the museum’s David and Fela Shapell Family Collections and Conservation Center in Bowie, Maryland, which is scheduled to be opened next year.

“Every day the museum engages in a battle to rescue truth and keep Holocaust memory alive — a battle that will only intensify with each passing year,” Sara Bloomfield, the museum director, said Monday in a statement.

Starting this month in Florida, the capsule will move on to collecting items in California, Illinois and New York before returning to Washington, D.C.

The Shapell Center is expected to provide enough space to allow the museum’s collections to double in size in the next 10 years.

Currently, the museum houses more than 18,000 objects, 76 million pages of documents, 135 million digital images, more than 88,000 photographs and images, and over 14,000 oral testimonies by survivors, witnesses and perpetrators.
