When you are a Jewish girl from Kansas, there may be a few misconceptions when you say you want to become a hip hop artist. Kansas City personality Sara “Miss Conception” Glass is working to change those perceptions.
Glass, who goes by the stage name of Miss Conception, has just released her fourth hip-hop album this spring, entitled “Sara-Tonin.” Consisting of 12 original tracks and one cover, she hopes to present something off-the-beaten path when it comes to writing lyrics.
“This is the fourth album I have put out that focuses on lyrics, so I would call it a hip hop album, others might call it poetry,” Glass said. {mprestriction ids="1,3"}“I have producers who make the music and I write the lyrics.”
The album features several musical producers and emcees working with Glass.
“This album is called ‘Sara-Tonin’ and is a big emphases on not trying to please any one fan or demographic,” she said. “I made this album for me, and I don’t care what anybody thinks about it.”
Glass says her first love are words, but she has been trained to entertain in other ways as well. She has worked with different teachers and troupes learning fire dancing and spinning. She received her journalism degree in strategic communications from KU in 2008, and has worked in event planning, public relations, graphic design, video editing, writing and editing for magazines. She also teaches workshops on the hula hoop and circus performing.
“At heart, I am an artist,” said Glass, who is the communications associate at Congregation Beth Torah. She is the daughter of Linda Glass and Norman Glass and his wife, Adina.
Sara Glass sees her art as a tool for a greater good.
“Social justice is another passion of mine, it is largely why I do what I do and write what I write about,” Glass said. “My grandfather, Sid Willens, has really influenced and shaped that notion. I just produced a documentary about him with MetaphorMedia about Sid’s work in civil rights in Kansas City.”
The documentary is called “The Hellraiser,” and it can be viewed on YouTube. Glass is also in in a feature-length film called “FreeVerse” that should be released by the end of the year.”
“And I am currently working on a short film called ‘Glass of Wine,’ a social commentary on what we put into our bodies. I love working with film and hope to be doing more of it.”
Glass’s album was recorded at Electric Cat Studios with support from Little Class Records. “Sara-Tonin” can be purchased on iTunes. For a list of her upcoming events visit her website at www.themissconception.com.{/mprestriction}
