Richard David (Dick) Seaton, 84, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on Jan. 18 at 7:49 pm in his home.
He was born Oct. 20, 1937, in Potosi, Wisconsin, to David K. (Dick) and Grace M. Seaton.
Richard grew up in Potosi and later moved to Lancaster, Wisconsin. He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1955.
After high school, he attended college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he received a degree in business in 1959. He stayed at the university until 1961 to participate in post graduate studies.
Richard married Louise Anton on July 26, 1961, in Kansas City. They were happily married for 60 years.
Richard joined the United States Army Reserve in 1961 and served for seven years. He was stationed in Kansas City with the 325th General Hospital as the company clerk. His unit was never called up to active duty. He was honorably discharged in 1968, achieving the rank of Specialist E-5.
Richard worked at the General Motors Leeds Assembly Plant as a manager from 1962 to 1967. He then went to work at The Shale Goodman Insurance Agency as the office manager for 10 years. In the 1980s, he opened his own business, The Mail Suite, in Overland Park, Kansas. When he retired from the business in 1990, he began working as the Manager of Personnel and Distribution for the New York Times/Wall Street Journal in the Johnson County, Kansas, area. He retired in 2004 and moved to Linn Valley Lakes, Kansas.
Richard was active in many service organizations during his life. He was part of the The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah Brotherhood while his daughters were in Sunday school. He volunteered with the Girl Scouts and was on the board of the Mid-Continent Girl Scout Council for six years while his daughters and wife were active in Girl Scouts. Richard also volunteered with the Boy Scouts for many years while his grandsons were active in Boy Scouts. He was also very active with the Sertoma of Johnson County. He served as the president of the club for two years and was the Kansas District Governor of Sertoma. He was named Sertoman of the Year 1997-1998.
Richard enjoyed reading, playing cards and games. He loved being outdoors, walking, hiking, and camping. Richard enjoyed traveling with his family on yearly family vacations. He loved college sports, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents David K. Seaton and Grace M. Seaton-Seipp. He is survived by his loving wife, Louise; his daughters Cheryl Seaton Graham, of Gardner, Kansas, Marsha (Jason) Phelps of Kansas City, and Sandra Seaton of Gardner; his three grandsons Ethan Graham, Matthew (Clara) Graham, Connor Phelps; granddaughter Noelle Graham; his great-grandson Thatcher Graham; and other relatives.
Richard’s celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Ave, Kansas City, Missouri. Email for the Zoom link and passcode.
