Ila “Tootie” Brown, 95, of Overland Park, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Tootie was born August 24, 1925 in Fremont, Nebraska, to the late Minnie and Joseph Monovitz.
Tootie built her life around relationships. She was known for her kind nature and incredible memory for people and events. She enjoyed playing bridge, poker and other games on a daily basis with her wide network of friends. Her family meant the world to her.
Tootie was a member of Congregation Beth Torah and a lifetime member of several organizations including Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, and the Children’s Asthmatic Research Institute and Hospital, of which she was president several years ago. Tootie was a member of Sigma Delta Tau at the University of Nebraska and remained an ardent supporter of the sorority. She engaged in numerous volunteer activities over her lifetime and so touched many lives.
Tootie was preceded in death by her husband Spencer Brown, son Steven Brown, and daughter Cathy Lowenstein. Tootie is survived by her daughter Paula (Stan Spector) Brown of Rochester, New York, and son-in-law Lon Lowenstein of Overland Park; her grandchildren Jessica Spector of Rochester, New York; Lane (Jenna) Lowenstein of San Carlos, California; Paige Lowenstein of Chicago, Illinois; and Sari Lowenstein of Kansas City, Missouri; and her great grandchildren Caleb and Ross Lowenstein.
A graveside service was held Sunday, August 22nd, at Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heritage Center at the Jewish Community of Greater Kansas City.
