Ethan Newman

Over the years members of the Kort family have all been very active in BBYO and subsequently B’nai B’rith and B’nai B’rith Women (now Jewish Women International.) Shown here at the retirement of longtime BBYO secretary Helen Slotnick (far right) are Arnold, Joan and Jeff Kort.

“We pledge to thee, oh BBG

Our love, our youth, our loyalty …”

Pictured in this circa 1950 photo is the ‘patriarch’ of the original seders, Oscar Gerson, in the middle, on the right side of the light on the wall. Two cousins who attended both this seder and the 2016 seder are Irene Stiefel Starr, the child in the far left foreground (second from left) and Joan Stiefel Greenbaum, the girl with a white flower in her hair at the end of that same table in the background.

In the early 1940s a tradition of seders began among immigrants from Germany. These immigrants included three Gerson siblings: Meta Gerson (Zanders), and Oscar and Arthur Gerson. As the years passed, families grew, as did the seder.

Betty and Erwin Stern attended the recent Holocaust remembrance service in Topeka, where they had author Nancy Sprowell Geise (center) sign a copy of her book, ‘Auschwitz #34207: The Joe Rubinstein Story.’ Photo courtesy of Rod Minkin

A REMARKABLE STORY — Betty Stern called me the other day, eager to share the experience she and her husband Erwin had at last week’s Yom HaShoah commemoration in Topeka. The couple always attend the Yom HaShoah commemoration held here every year, but did not know about the one in Topeka until they read about it in a recent Midwest Center for Holocaust Education newsletter.
