The Kansas African American Museum (TKAAM) and Jewish Community Relations Bureau | American Jewish Committee (JCRB | AJC) are bringing the play “Canaan: A Cultural Presentation” to The White Theatre.

The White Theatre will host the performance on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. After the Sept. 18 show, Rabbi David Glickman of Congregation Beth Shalom and Dr. Rev. Vernon Percy Howard, President of Southern Christian Leadership Conference-GKC, will take part in a talkback discussion about the show.

“Canaan” was written by Wichita native Micah Ariel Watson and is a coming-of-age story about a teenager and his community in Washington, D.C., in the tumultuous year of 1968. In the play, neighbors must decide where their loyalties lie when the civil rights movement takes a downward turn.

This production represents TKAAM’s effort to elevate unique African American experiences through a variety of mediums and share these unique stories. “Canaan” had a successful run in Wichita, and by bringing it to the Kansas City area, TKAAM is building on its initiative to share its mission with all of Kansas.

“We are excited to work with a talented, young playwright, Micah Ariel Watson, artistic director Sheila Kinnard, and the Jewish Community Relations Bureau | American Jewish Committee and to bring our vision to the Kansas City Metropolitan area,” said Denise Sherman, Executive Director of TKAAM.
