The award-winning Broadway musical “Kinky Boots” has been confirmed as part of the 2022-2023 season lineup at the Lewis & Shirley White Theatre at The J.

The popular musical, which last came to Kansas City as a touring show in 2016, will run from Jan. 28 to Feb. 19, 2023, and will be directed by Tim Bair, producing artistic director of Theatre in the Park.

“We are thrilled to be the first theater in the Kansas City metro area to premiere ‘Kinky Boots’ after wildly successful runs on Broadway, London’s West End, and a standing-room-only national tour,” said Keith Wiedenkeller, director of arts and culture at The J. “Here at The White Theatre, we try to build community each season by offering something for everyone, and we know that people love the story, humor and unbridled joy ‘Kinky Boots’ brings to the stage.”

Adapted by Harvey Fierstein from the 2005 Miramax movie of the same name, and loosely based on true events, “Kinky Boots” tells the story of a young shoe factory owner and his unlikely friendship with Lola, a fabulous entertainer, as they work together to create a line of stilettos unlike any the world has seen. Although the duo seem to have nothing in common, they learn to embrace their differences as they work to save a family business.

Having debuted on Broadway in 2013, “Kinky Boots” is a winner of major Best Musical awards including a Tony Award, Grammy Award and London’s Olivier Award, and features an original score by Cyndi Lauper.

The entire 2022-2023 season at The Lewis & Shirley White Theatre will be announced later this spring, and season tickets will go on sale shortly thereafter. Tickets for the current 2021-2022 season are on sale now. Guests can see the world premiere of “Surviving Hitler” from April 9 to 14 and the musical “Matilda,” running July 2 to 24.

As part of The White Theatre’s COVID-19 safety policy for the 2021-2022 season, all guests must wear masks, and either be fully vaccinated or provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test. For more information, visit thewhitetheatre.org.
