Tenth-grader Judah Schuster poses for a moment during sukkah building at HBHA.

HBHA, with its cyclical learning model, rotates between one week of in-person learning and one week of virtual learning, continues to seek creative ways to safely educate its students during in-person weeks. From Hebrew lessons to PE to social studies, HBHA teachers are working outside time into their daily class schedules to allow students to safely learn while also getting fresh air and mask breaks throughout the day.

To add to the available learning spaces, HBHA recently purchased and constructed two brand-new Sukkot, thanks to a donation from Ed and Ellen Rose via the Edward S. Rose Family Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation. Now decked out with tables and chairs, the sukkot provide two open-air classrooms. Screened windows, open doorways and an open top provide significant airflow.

“Sukkot is a favorite time of year for many at HBHA, and we are really excited to have these as additional spaces where our students can safely learn together. While our sukkah is always busy during the festival of Sukkot, we anticipate these will be popular classroom spots on an ongoing basis,” HBHA Head of School Adam Tilove said.

Just as with every year, HBHA’s Upper and Middle School students helped build the sukkot so all students can enjoy them. Lower School students then get the opportunity to create decorations to add to the beauty of the structure.
