The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah welcomes the entire Kansas City Jewish community to Shofar in the Park-ing Lot on Sunday, Sept. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m.

This exciting new Rosh Hashanah celebration promises an afternoon filled with fun, connection and Jewish joy for all ages.

Families, friends, neighbors and community members of every generation can gather at the event to usher in the year 5787 with live music, food trucks, raffle baskets, hands-on holiday activities, special treats, dedicated adults-only spaces and plenty of surprises along the way.

Open to the entire community, this unique event is an opportunity to celebrate the sweetness of a new year, strengthen connections with one another and create meaningful memories.

B’nai Jehudah will also host a Challah Bake-Off at the event, with a panel of judges who each has a personal connection to the rich tradition of the Jewish neighborhood bakery, where recipes, relationships and community were passed from one generation to the next.

Challah judge Debby Winkel is the daughter of Wilbert Gale, co-owner of Kansas City’s Cake Box Bakers. What began as a family bakery grew to seven locations throughout the metropolitan area, with two locations also housing Jewish delicatessens. For generations, Cake Box Bakers provided breads, cakes, pastries and holiday favorites to Kansas City families, making Winkel part of a cherished chapter in the city's Jewish culinary history.

Challah judges Judy Jacks Berman and Alice Jacks Achtenberg are the daughters of Holocaust survivor Bronia Roslawowski, who rebuilt her life in Kansas City and, together with her husband, Mendel, owned M&M Bakery & Delicatessen. Originally established as a kosher bakery and deli serving the Jewish community, M&M became a beloved neighborhood institution and a gathering place for families across the city. Their family’s story reflects resilience, entrepreneurship, and the enduring power of food to bring people together.

Challah judge Rita Sudhalter brings an East Coast Jewish bakery legacy to the judges’ table. As the daughter of the owners of Pastry Land in Brookline, Massachusetts, she grew up surrounded by the aromas, traditions and recipes of a vibrant Jewish community. Her family bakery experience gives Rita a special appreciation for the craftsmanship and love that go into every loaf.
