Kansas Interfaith Action (KIFA) awarded community member Judy Sherry its “Beloved Community Award” at its annual fundraising event last month.
Sherry was awarded because of her involvement with Grandparents for Gun Safety (GGS), an organization she founded after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. In addition to advocating for gun safety, GGS also distributes gun locks through its Lock It For Love program.
“It is indeed an honor to receive the Beloved Award at KIFA’s annual event, and a wonderful opportunity for me to share the work of Grandparents for Gun Safety with a large and attentive audience,” Sherry said. “Clearly, our two organizations complement each other as we advocate for moral public policy both in Kansas and the country through our elected officials. We share the vision of a humane society, enabling everyone to feel safe and thrive in their communities, and we believe in the power of interfaith action to help bring that vision to fruition.”
KIFA is an organization that works to educate, engage and advocate on behalf of people of faith regarding social, economic and climate justice issues. Members lobby at the state legislature regarding priorities such as immigrant and LGBTQ+ rights and fully-funded public education. Rabbi Moti Rieber is its executive director.
