This year, the Greater Kansas City Section of the National Council of Jewish Women’s (NCJW) Mother’s Day Store went to five schools and served 1700 students.

The Mother’s Day Store happens every year on the Friday before Mother’s Day. Elementary school children from low-income schools or community programs “shop” for a gift for their special someone.

Elementary school lunchrooms were transformed by NCJW staff. Tables were covered with carefully sorted necklaces, bracelets and pendants. Volunteers arranged displays and greeted children. The children walked in—some shy, some excited — with the opportunity to choose a gift for someone they love.

One principle was brought to tears. She said, “You have no idea what this means to the kids, the positive impact you are having.”

Staff and volunteers said the children were not looking for the most expensive piece or the flashiest, but instead for the one that feels just right. It’s not just jewelry; it’s pride, thoughtfulness and love wrapped into one small package.
