The Lewis & Shirley White Theatre at The J will present “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That … Sving,” celebrating the legacy of Jewish big band leaders and musicians in the golden era of swing and big band jazz.

It will feature music by legendary artists such as Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and Willie Smith.

The event is part of The White Theatre’s 2025-2026 Concert Series on Saturday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 26, at 3 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at The White Theatre’s box office and at TheWhiteTheatre.org.

“This concert felt special to program because it celebrates the iconic music of the big band era while shining a light on the often-overlooked Jewish musicians who helped shape it,” said Jonah Greene, director of Arts & Culture at The J. “By highlighting figures like Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, we hope the concert entertains people while bringing greater recognition to the lasting influence of these Jewish artists on American music.”

Under the leadership of Ron Ernst, the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra of Kansas City will perform the big band music. Audiences will learn more about the Jewish composers and bandleaders who influenced the sound of swing.

“Big Band music is so enduring because it makes you want to dance and sing along,” Ernst said.

The performance is intended to reflect The J’s mission of celebrating Jewish culture and history through the arts by showing how Jewish artists helped shape mainstream American culture in an engaging, accessible and entertaining way.

The show is recommended for ages 12 and older.
