Shirley E. Steinberg, 88, of Overland Park, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Ave., Kansas City, Mo., with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. The family suggests contributions to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, 1111 Main St., Suite 450, Kansas City, Mo. 64105.
The daughter of Mary and Harry Berkson, Shirley was born in Atchison, Kan., and lived there until she was 16 years old when the family moved to Kansas City, Mo. She then lived in the Kansas City area the rest of her life.
Shirley attended Kansas City Business College and then went to work for the government in the War Assets Administration for four years. In 1961 she married the love of her life, Harold Steinberg. They were married for 53 wonderfully happy years that seemed to pass much too quickly.
She loved the performing arts, especially live theater productions, the symphony and the ballet. The ladies in her Mah Jongg group, which she loved, played together for more than 60 years.
Shirley had a passion to see the different cultures of the world, traveling to many parts of the globe, often by cruise ship, with her beloved husband. She turned her passion into her vocation, working in the travel industry for 25 years, nine of those at Accent on Travel, an agency she and Harold owned together.
She believed in volunteer work and was a life member of the National Council of Jewish Women, where she was top earner and seller of ads. Shirley was also a board member of Temple B’nai Jehudah’s Sisterhood and Hadassah.
Her greatest love was for her family. In addition to Harold, she is survived by her daughter Tammy Zwick and her husband Arvin Zwick, who she considered her son, and her granddaughter Heather Zwick, who was recently engaged to Andrew Pohlman. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law Betty and Donald Kopin.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, sisters Francis Jacobs, Elizabeth Glass, Mina Rose Seff and their husbands; sister Margo Burke; and brothers James Berkson and Myron Berkson.
The family wishes to thank hospice nurses Gail, Anna, Joan, Bobbie and her home care provider Rebecca, for their wonderful care and kindness.
