Solomon Burstein, 98, of Overland Park, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at St. Luke’s–Plaza.
Services were held Monday, Feb. 17, in the Yukon Chapel at Mount Carmel Cemetery, followed by burial. The family suggests contributions to Congregation Beth Shalom, B’nai B’rith or a charity of one’s choice.
Sol was born in New Bedford, Mass., in 1915.
He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Sol was a lifetime member of Congregation Beth Shalom and B’nai B’rith. He was also a member of the Jewish War Veterans, Jewish Federation of Kansas City and the World Jewish Congress.
Sol served his country during World War II aboard the USS Hadnot and the Marine Arrow, fueling vessels in the South Atlantic Theater.
Sol had an irrepressible sense of humor and an indomitable entrepreneurial spirit. He was instrumental in the development of a variety of successful business ventures and became an acknowledged authority on the use of cotton and synthetic fibers in the manufacture of bedding materials and insulated garments.
He was founder of Superior Felt Corp. and National Fiber Corp., was co-founder and former president of the Fabri-Quilt Corporation of North Kansas City, Mo., and was a member of the National Cotton Council.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rabbi Mordechai and Shana Burstein; brothers, Al and Irwin Burstein; sister, Jean Burstein Glazer; grandson, Mathew Burstein; brothers-in-law, Harry, Morris and Joseph Kanter; sisters-in-law, Helen Kanter, Frances Jacobson and Charlotte Kanter; his nephew, Dr. Neal Burstein; and his beloved wife of 63 years, Mindel Kanter Burstein, who passed away in April 2003.
Sol is survived by his sons, H. Michael and Robert Burstein, Leawood; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Ronald and Dr. Laura Burstein, Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren, Joel and Melissa Burstein, Tucson; sisters-in-law, Barbara Burstein, Denver, and Shirlee Kanter, Mission Hills; and many nieces and nephews.
Sol will be greatly missed, but will live forever in the memory of his children and grandchildren and all others who have been touched by his love, generosity and infectious passion for life.
