Parkans, Edis Lewis

Edis Lewis Parkans, 90, of Overland Park, Kansas, died peacefully on Aug. 18, 2017, at the Kansas City Hospice House. Services were held on Aug. 20 at Congregation Beth Torah in Overland Park.

Edis was the consummate family member, friend and volunteer. She was born in Houston, Texas, to Bell and Sam Lewis and lived there until she and her husband Sid moved to Kansas City over 15 years ago. While in Houston, Edis was an actively involved community volunteer serving Congregation Emanu El as the Sisterhood president for several terms and as a member of the temple board. Her greatest love was her service to B’nai B’rith Women, where she served as a chapter president and moved up to serve as president of District 7, which covered the seven southern states. This role led to her service on BBW’s national board and terms on the boards of both Hillel International and the Anti-Defamation League. Her community work led to professional work for both Jewish Family Services in their Russian Resettlement Program and with the Girl Scouts in volunteer services and fund development. Edis left behind a large circle of friends that she had stayed in close contact with since moving here.

Since moving to Kansas, Edis developed the same connection with people here and created another large circle of friends through her involvement with Congregation Beth Torah as a member of their board and living at The Atriums.

Edis was predeceased by her parents and her husband of 65 years, Sid. She is survived by her daughters Dana Katz (Marc) of Carmel, Indiana, and Cindy Parkans (Dr. Gary Morgan) of Kansas City, Missouri. She is also survived by her brother Dean Lewis of San Antonio, Texas.

Donations in her memory can be made to the General Fund of Congregation Beth Torah, 6100 W. 127th St., Overland Park, KS, 66209.
