Hurst, Morton Leon

Morton L. Hurst, 89, of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Kansas City Hospice House. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 18, at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64131, and burial followed at Mount Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Kansas City Hospice House, Congregation Beth Shalom, Shriner’s Children’s Hospital or a charity of one’s choice.

Morton was born Dec. 7, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Benjamin and Sarah (Krashin) Hurst, and was a lifelong area resident. He attended Kansas City, Missouri, schools and graduated from Central High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Korean Conflict. After the service, he joined the family jewelry business, Hurst’s Diamond Shop, in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

Morton met the love of his life, Shirley Levine, on a blind date and they enjoyed 63 wonderful years together.

He was a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Shalom and B’nai B’rith. Morton especially enjoyed his role as an Ararat Shrine member. He enjoyed golfing at the Meadowbrook Country Club and also loved his longtime card playing group that was together for over 40 years.

Morton was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Darwin Hurst and Alvin Hurst; and his sisters: Freda Ruback and Betty Betanski.

He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Hurst, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law: Michael Hurst (Debi), Belton, Missouri, and Richard Hurst (Lisa), Leawood, Kansas; daughter and son-in-law: Deanna Levine (Steven), Manhattan Beach, California; his grandchildren: Marcus (Brant), Joshua, Jillian and Halle Hurst; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Arthur Levine (Linda), Overland Park, Kansas; sister-in-law: Bernadyne Hurst, Prairie Village, Kansas; and his nieces and nephews.

Morton’s natural sense of humor and zest for life will be carried on by his loving family.
