The Center for Practical Bioethics, a Kansas City-based nonprofit recognized for its work in practical bioethics throughout the United States, is introducing a new fundraiser in partnership with the debut of a local art exhibition.

Art of the Wish, a special one-night event on Thursday, May 12, at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Gallery, will raise money for the Center for Practical Bioethics and includes a personal meet-and-greet with the artists and a choice of two sessions featuring either appetizers or desserts.

Art of the Wish honorary co-chairs are Sue Seidler Nerman and Norberto “Rob” Ayala-Flores. Board member Alan Edelman chairs the volunteer steering committee.

Artists Andy Newcom and Marn Jensen are the creators of the art exhibit. They asked more than 200 older adults throughout the United States what their wishes were for themselves, their family and the world. Then, they created artwork based on these conversations and wishes. The exhibit will be featured at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Gallery in the Kansas City Crossroads from March 4 through May 27.

“These incredible works of art and the stories that accompany each piece convey some of the same values as the Center for Practical Bioethics and in such a powerful, creative and impactful way. We are thrilled to be able to showcase the exhibition to our longtime donors and new supporters as our annual fundraiser,” said John G. Carney, president and CEO of Center for Practical Bioethics.

The Center works to protect the interests of those who are typically overlooked — the elderly, poor and minorities. That’s why the leaders at the Center knew the exhibition would be the ideal fit for a 2022 benefit event.

“We anticipate that everyone who experiences Art of the Wish will come away with a deeper appreciation for the wisdom of people who have lived long lives and the value of human connection. We also hope all of us will be able to turn those feelings into acts of listening, caring and kindness,” Carney said.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the Center’s services that assist patients, families and providers make critical healthcare decisions and continue programs to promote ethics and equality in health and healthcare for all.
